The Knowledge of Life
Ayurveda, which translates from the Sanskrit language to “the knowledge of life”, has its roots in India over 5,000 years ago. These roots, both physiological and philosophical, strive to re-connect us to our true nature or, who we are at the most basic and balanced levels of body, mind and spirit. As a medical science, ayurveda works on all of these levels to heal symptoms and disease at their root and maintain a state of health and well being. As a philosophy, ayurveda gives us a better understanding of why disease develops in the first place and how to compassionately view ourselves and others as perfect beings. Though Ayurveda has evolved over the course of time and in its movement to the West, its basic concepts are still very much alive, relevant and fully integrated into all healing programs at Solace Health Ayurveda. Solace Health is dedicated to preserving the integrity of ayurveda while making it accessible and understandable to the public.
Harmony in the Five Senses
The science of ayurveda is based in the idea that through the portals of our senses-taste, touch, smell, sight and sound, we experience the world around us and our actions in it are then determined. We choose, everyday, what to eat, what to wear, what TV shows to watch, which music to listen to, who we touch and interact with physically, what perfumes or smells to wear, etc. Each of these choices defines who we are in the world and ultimately if we are healthy or unhealthy. The types of food, smells, sounds, colors, etc. that will restore or aggravate an individual’s balance will be different for everyone and are determined by your ayurvedic constitution. Your constitution was determined at the moment of your conception and is a balance of three primary energies called doshas. Knowledge of your constitution can provide you with amazing clarity as to how to live a life of health and well being. An Ayurvedic program will take you through various therapies to treat all five senses as follows:
- Taste: food & herbs
- Touch: massage
- Smell: aromatherapy
- Sight: color therapy
- Sound: mantra, chanting, music
Every program includes these therapies as well as additional treatments or therapies depending on the goals of each program.
How it Works
Ayurveda is like the ancient proverb, “Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime.” Your clinical ayurvedic specialist (CAS) is there to teach, monitor, guide and support you on your path to health. Ayurveda is not a passive system. You and your CAS work as a team and it is up to you, the client, to implement the therapies into your daily life, allowing for a much deeper level of healing to take place. When your program is finished, you will have a toolbox full of knowledge and therapies that will guide you in sustaining your health. Eventually, you may only need your CAS for seasonal cleanses or maintenance from time to time. One of the most beautiful aspects of Ayurveda is that the benefits will reach far beyond yourself. In essence, through your own healing and lifestyle changes, your family, friends, co-workers, etc. will also receive healing in someway. Through following an ayurvedic program, one is empowered to live a life most balanced for them. I invite you to get to know your true nature and learn how to harmonize body, mind and spirit to achieve optimum health and peace of mind for yourself.
Doshas
The Three Doshas
Your ayurvedic constitution is the fundamental balance of three basic energies called doshas. These doshas are derived from combinations of the five elements, ether, air, fire, water and earth, which make up everything in our universe. The three doshas are Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Everyone has all three doshas, in different amounts, in their constitution but generally one or two are most predominant. For this reason, no two ayurvedic programs are identical, and each person’s path toward optimal health is unique. A Clinical Ayurvedic Specialist (CAS) can give you the most accurate information as to what your unique constitution is and then teach you how to use that information to begin living a life of balance. Take a look at the descriptions and lists below to get an idea of what your constitution and imbalances may be. Read more
